Day 97 - Winterhaven, California

The road to California… It has been quite the adventure and it has challenged me in ways I did not expect. The truth of the matter is: it’s a mental game- It’s not the physical world around me that’s been the biggest challenge… It’s been navigating my own thoughts and emotions. I’ve had good days and bad days, and I’ve found out: To a certain degree, we are control of choosing what kind of days we want to have… I had days that everything went wrong and I let it make me feel defeated from the gate. I’d wake up and it’s a windy day, all uphill, with rough roads- and I CHOSE to let that bring me down…
I had days I got lost, I ended up hiking up mountains tip-toeing around rattlesnakes until 7:00 in the morning…
I had days that I felt like I couldn’t lift my feet off the ground, and I had to put in 60+ miles to achieve the distance I wanted to hit… I had days that I let my emotions get the best of me, and I had days I CHOSE to overcome it!
Day 97 brought me to California, but it ended me up on a 19 mile hike through the desert, that started at 10:00 PM, after a full day of skating, with limited food and water… I started off by jogging in the sand for one song, and then power walking the next- hoping to get through this stretch before daylight. After just a few hours, I physically couldn’t go on, and I had to set up my gear in the desert, get some rest, and continue in the morning. The difference between today and other bad days:
I CHOSE to focus on the positive aspects of my day!
I CHOSE to enjoy the struggle!
I CHOSE to feel like I was having a good day, regardless of the circumstances...
And we all have this power, every single day.
As I laid in the desert, looking up at the sky, I counted over 30 shooting stars before I fell asleep.
This was no misfortune, I was right where I needed to be and it turned out to be one of my favorite days of the journey.
Next time you think you’re having a bad day, shift your focus to the positives and magic can happen!
This was an excruciating 28 mile day, only a 350 foot climb.
