Day 96 - Yuma, Arizona

Day 96 was awesome, really… but I made a mistake trusting my maps and thought I’d hit a gas station at the 22 mile mark…
I’ve gotten really good at calculating how much hydration to bring with me at any given time…
Too much water = too much weight = slower skating
I was down to about half a liter and had one mile until where I thought I could get more water and snacks, but it turned out I had to skate another 16 miles! Shortly before I realized this miscalculation, I had a man on the road pull over and offer me water! I thought I was near a convenience store so I declined, and regretted it almost instantly. And this was one of the hottest days I’ve dealt with in a while, weaving through backroad farmland for hours! It was beautiful but there was no escaping the sun, and the roads were littered with mud patties, caked on top of the asphalt- making it a bumpy uncomfortable ride!
As I got away from the farmland and onto the highway, I feel like every rock in the world was conspiring against me, it felt like skating on gravel and my board kept getting caught up on them… slowing me down even more! Finally, I realized the sun would set if I didn’t hurry up and paint, and I’d have to wait to get to the store.
There was a moment that my frustration was too much to keep calm, and in a blissful release, I tossed my skateboard into the air, and suddenly I felt a weight lifted off my soul, and I chuckled as it plopped into the sand below.
I found a cool little train bridge to paint, eventually rehydrated, and made it to Yuma- the final town before entering California. I made it 36 miles today, with a climb of only about 400 feet.
Sometimes in life you just need to throw something and everything will be ok...
