Day 81 - Deming, New Mexico

This is how I spent my Thanksgiving! I got woken up by a man working maintenance on the gas station, and he politely asked me to leave, after buying me a coffee. I chatted with him for a bit and told him about the mission, and how I was heading to San Diego on a mission to raise money for kids art supplies. He said his boss is from San Diego, and I asked him to send him over so he can yell at me! I was joking around with him, and he ended up changing his mind about making me leave, knowing I wasn't the ordinary vagrant. I got to sleep in a little bit, which was nice in my cozy sleeping bag on a tarp in the dirt. Temperatures reached below freezing last night, so it was nice to let it heat up a bit before getting back on the road. It turned out to be a good day, I even had a dinner date with the love of my life! (my skateboard) I had a turkey dinner at Denny's and skated onward from there. I got to work on a fun painting at the rail yard of some train cars before pushing through the night. I had someone almost kill me while I was skating down the highway. There was nobody on the road except for me and this car, and they swerved past the opposite lane into the shoulder where I was, and I had to get off the road to not get run over. I'm not sure if they were blacked out hammered, or out for blood, but it was unnerving. Quiet dark desert stretch for this evening, and I made it another 40 miles of skateboarding today including cruising around town finding somewhere that was open for turkey day. I ended my night at a gas station where I camped out behind a concrete structure that housed flammable items. It smelt like gas, but I was in the only area that wasn't directly facing the road. After getting woken up this morning, I wanted to sleep undetected at this rest stop. For a wild Thanksgiving living on the road, I was feeling super grateful for this opportunity to explore and create in the name of kids creativity!
