Day 78 - Vado, New Mexico

This was a rough navigation day... I crossed the Rio Grande on a bike path and it started off beautiful! I got to do a little flatland freestyle skateboarding along the path, and was feeling excited for a day of progress. That's when the road turned to dirt. I had to redirect and take the main roads again. The shoulders were sketchy, but it was unavoidable if I were to stay off the interstate. I got tired of the rough frontage roads, and found a route that would take me to a different highway. As I headed in that direction, I ended up in a rough neighborhood with rundown houses, and a ton of chained up, barking dogs. Most of the yard enclosures were broken fences, pieces of wood, and scraps. I was really lucky none of the angry dogs escaped to attack me. I found a small orchard and got to paint the trees before sundown. I wanted to make it up to Las Cruces tonight to grab stickers I had mailed to another tattoo shop. My maps led me to a dead end that had a blockade and no trespassing signs. I had to turn back, and I was livid. The maps got confused with the streets because I was now on dirt roads in a trailer community, with all these dogs barking at me, and I was getting lost. I spent over an hour just to backtrack to the service road with no shoulder, but I was at least back on the move. Rolling hills got me pretty close to Las Cruces for the night, and I called it at 40 miles.
