For day 70, I woke up on a picnic bench after just a few hours of in and out sleep. Yesterday was 45 miles of skating and hiking desert trails. I was literally tip toeing around rattle snakes and stepping on thorns that kept tearing through my shoes… until 7 am! I'm always down for adventure, but this had my on high alert, hyper focused on the brush and rocks on the ground; calculating each step in hopes there's no camouflaged rattlesnakes ready to end me in the desert. I was running on fumes, and I had a 28 mile journey that was mainly hiking again… but I still managed to get a cool painting in! I was having a terrible time trying to navigate the outdated trails beside the railroad, constantly finding myself in dead ends, where I had to trek through tall grasses in hopes that there wasn't anything hidden that could attack me. I was unsure about the legality of pedestrians on the interstate, and was afraid if I got pulled over, that by law, I would be given a ride to the next exit, and have to backtrack to make sure I crossed the entire country using only my own strength for forward progress. I eventually made it to a gas station that I arrived at 2:00 am to sleep outside on the ground for about 2 hours. There was another homeless man sleeping beside me. I had a mylar blanket I used to try and stay warm, but the cold ground stole all the warmth out of me and I woke up trembling. Tired, sore, and cold; but not ready to give up- I had to push forward for day 71 to make it to the next town!
