Day 66 was a long one! 63.8 miles with only 135 feet of elevation gain! I spent one day in New Mexico , before I headed back to Texas! I made my way from Hobbs to Eunice, NM, where I worked on this painting… I forgot about the time change, so I had to complete it in less than a half hour. It was challenging, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I wasn't sure if I was going to head back to the nearest hotel or keep pushing, and after a moment of uncertainty, I decided to keep going. The roads started out pretty alright, yet a little jumpy with cracks, and then things went from bad to worse. They were paving the highway, and there was an 8 mile stretch where I suppose they stripped the top layer of asphalt, and it was a big patch of rumbles. I was pulled over by yet another sheriff, and she was super cool, just wanted to make sure I was alright. She got my art drop for the night, and I pushed on into the darkness. I made it 42 miles to the town of Jal- an oilfield town, and I ran into a problem there- there were no hotels! I had already ditched my camping gear, and did not want to try and sleep in the desert, so I had to go even farther. The next 22 miles or so were just me and giant oilfield trucks blasting down the flat, dusty roads. I had a moment of awe on this night, where I had to stop and take it in. The horizon was lit up with flames shooting from drilling rigs, and I could hear nothing but the rumbling of trucks in the distance. I tried to get some good photos and videos of the skyline, but my phone camera failed to do justice. That image is forever painted in my brain, and I might need to put it on a canvas someday...
